Precise Geolocation

SonarVision is compatible with two completely different ultra-precise positioning systems: VPS and RTK. You can switch between them while on the move.

VPS

Google VPS

Google VPS is available anywhere Google Street View imagery is available. Make sure your entire route is visible on Google Street View.

To check if your route includes streets with Google panoramic imagery, simply go to Google Maps, then enable the “Street View” layer to view all of Google’s panoramic imagery

Apple VPS

Apple VPS is available only in the following cities:

GNSS RTK

RTK is particularly useful for precise geolocation in rural or forested areas. This receiver works just as well at night as it does during the day. Learn more: GNSS RTK

Centipede Network Availability

SonarVision currently uses the Centipede Network to obtain the RTCM corrections necessary for precise RTK operation. This open-source network covers most of metropolitan France, certain overseas territories, and a few other regions around the world. The SonarVision app automatically connects to the nearest active RTK base station.

You can visit the official map to view existing stations around the world.

The editing platform

The editing platform app.sonarvision.fr

The editing tools that let you manually modify a route are available worldwide! However, the route planner and base maps—which rely on highly accurate cartographic data—are not available everywhere.

The route planner

Our route planner works in Europe, North America, Oceania, Japan, and South Korea.

However, to generate routes, pedestrian paths (sidewalks, crosswalks, etc.) must be mapped on OpenStreetMap. Mapping on OpenStreetMap

Here is a map allowing you to view pedestrian data on OpenStreetMap.

Base Maps

Base maps are crucial for planning your routes. We recommend scrolling through the different base maps to determine which one is most accurate for you.

There’s often a trade-off between image accuracy and when the images were taken.

Try comparing aerial imagery with recent panoramic imagery or by visiting the area in person.

  • In France, we recommend starting with the France Satellite UHD and HD basemaps.

  • The France Express 2024 background layer contains the most recent imagery, but it is less accurate and does not cover all of France.

  • The Maptiler layer works worldwide but is not always the most accurate or the most recent.

  • The OpenStreetMap base map should be used with caution, as building outlines are often based on cadastral data and are accurate to within about ten centimeters.
