Planning a trip in a zone without pedestrian mapping
Last updated 12 days ago
This article aims to shed light on the different methods available to you for preparing high-precision routes in areas that are not mapped on OpenStreetMap.
See Zones de couverture des technologies SonarVision for more information.
Method 1: Use only the SonarVision platform
If you don't want to complicate things and the route is not very long, the simplest solution is to stick to the SonarVision editing platform:
Add and check the positions of the start and end points on the platform.
Use the route calculator to calculate a first draft of the route between the two locations. You can right-click to add waypoints.
Please note: this first draft will therefore use sections of road!Shift the route to the sidewalk (left-click on the route nodes) and add crosswalks, traffic islands, and stairs (right-click on the route segment).
Click on the "Check" button and then save.
The downside of this method is that when you prepare your next route in this area, you will have to repeat all these steps! This can quickly become time-consuming.
Method 2: Map on OpenStreetMap and then wait for the route calculator to update.
If you know you are going to create multiple routes in an area or simply want to contribute to improving the pedestrian route graph, which will benefit all SonarVision users, it is best to first map the route on OpenStreetMap. This is a slightly more complex process with a learning curve, but it will save you a lot of time in the long run.
Determine the area to be mapped. You can use the route calculator and waypoints to visualize the streets to which you want to add pedestrian paths. We recommend that you always add a little more than you need: this will allow you to easily make small detours.
Add the pedestrian paths in this area to OpenStreetMap by following this tutorial: Améliorer les résultats du calculateur d'itinéraire. Upload your work before midnight (UTC+2) if you want your changes to be reflected the next day.
Wait for the route planner SonarVision to update. The update starts every day at midnight (French time UTC+2) and takes a little over 2 hours.
The next day, recalculate the route between your two points. If you have done a good job while mapping, the route is usable as is, but you can still refer to the following article if necessary: Créer un bon trajet
Method 3: Record a track
In some cases, it is easier to go out into the field to record a route. You can then use the track recording feature: Enregistrer une trace
It will soon be possible to export your track in GPX format and upload it directly to OpenStreetMap so that it can be used to improve the pedestrian graph.
